Environment Commissioner Dr Maria Panayiotou announced on Thursday the start of planting 11,000 deep-rooted trees and shrubs, which will take place gradually until 2026, inviting organised groups to join the effort.
Addressing the press conference announcing the start of tree plantings, the Commissioner said that "with every tree we plant, we take root deeper in our future".
According to Panayiotou, degraded rural areas at risk of desertification in the districts of Nicosia and Larnaka have been selected for tree planting, which are estimated to become even more vulnerable due to the consequences of climate change.
He noted that the plantings will take place in the framework of the project "LIFE-AgrOassis", which aims to help adapt to climate change in the agricultural sector of Cyprus and Greece.
He said that this press conference is not just another usual announcement for tree planting, but is "a collective effort aimed at bringing measurable, positive results and specific good practices that will mitigate the effects of climate change".
