A new case of electronic fraud is being investigated by the Police, with a victim of an investment services company, in Limassol. The case was reported by a 40-year-old executive of the company in question, who reportedly said that the amount that the fraudsters managed to extort exceeded 48,000 US dollars.
According to what the 40-year-old reported to the ICF of Limassol, on October 28, 2023, during an exchange of emails with a shareholder of the company, he was asked to transfer the amount of $ 48,250 to an electronic wallet, indicated to him. The complainant proceeded to transfer the amount of money, but in a telephone conversation he had a little later with the above shareholder, it was found that this person never gave him such instructions.
The Financial Crime Prosecution Office of the ICF Limassol is investigating the case.
On the occasion of this case, the Police calls, once again, on the public to be particularly careful in their transactions and in any money transfer over the internet, since any such transaction carries risks.
It also advises, in case they receive messages, for payment of invoices or money transfer, etc., before proceeding with the processing of the transaction, to always proceed to the verification of the message, through telephone communication with the persons referred to as senders.
For this communication, the telephone number with which the two sides have been in contact again or indicated in messages exchanged between them in previous transactions should be used.
Company owners or directors are encouraged to inform their company's staff about this form of fraud and to implement procedures to verify the payment requests they receive.
