Two men arrested in the occupied north do not appear to have a connection to the murders of Thanasis Kalogeropoulos and Alexis ‘Alexoui’ Mavromichalis, Christos Andreou, the Police’s Spokesperson, told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).

Andreou noted that one of the detainees, a holder of a German passport, is wanted in Poland, while the second man currently has no charges against him.

Andreou detailed the events, stating that on October 28, a German national arriving at Larnaca Airport was identified via the Schengen information system as wanted by Polish authorities for various offences, including involvement in criminal activities and money laundering.

The individual was in custody until October 31 and appeared before the Larnaca District Court, which ordered extradition procedures to Poland. Conditions for release included a €50,000 deposit, addition to the stop list, surrender of travel documents, and mandatory appearances at the Germasogeia Police Station.

According to Andreou, the wanted man failed to appear at the station on November 3. On November 4, information emerged that he, along with two others, attempted to travel to Turkey via the Ercan airport in occupied Nicosia, where they were apprehended due to lacking the required “entry stamp” into the occupied north.

Moreover, upon investigation, it was revealed that the second Polish man, detained in the occupied areas with the wanted individual, arrived in Cyprus at Larnaca Airport on November 2.

CNA reported that three individuals were apprehended at the illegal airport in Tymbou. Among them were the wanted German passport holder, another man detained with him, and a woman not taken into custody, unlike the two facing charges of illegal entry into the occupied territory.

Earlier on Thursday, Turkish Cypriot newspaper Haber Kibris reported that ‘authorities’ in the occupied north arrested two men on suspicion of being involved in the murder of Kalogeropoulos, while they were trying to flee Cyprus via a private jet through Ercan airport.
