Pafos Live 16 October 2023
Tens of tons of rubbish were removed by crews of the municipality of Pafos in a large campaign organized in the morning in an area located just a hundred meters from the tourist area of the Tombs of the Kings.
Municipal crews actually defused a health bomb in the heart of the tourist area of the Tombs of the Kings , after immigrants, mainly from African countries, lived in an apartment building that had been cut off for six months, as well as in neighbouring buildings.
The owners of the buildings, now in the possession of commercial banks, had converted the parking lots and basements of the buildings into places where immigrants lived. Paphos Mayor Phedon Phedonos, who inspected the works, said he had never seen a similar situation before, since the sewerage system was not working and residents were using the roof of the building for their physical needs.
Six of the apartments of the apartment building have so far been inhabited by immigrants who will move to empty spaces with the assistance of the district welfare office.
Phedonos said that it is unacceptable for migrants to receive rent allowances for apartments that have had neither water nor electricity for months.
After cleaning the premises the apartment building and adjacent buildings will be sealed. Police investigations found that two foreigners found in the area were staying illegally on the territory of the republic and will be deported.
