PAPHOS SEWAGE BOARD - DID THE ORGANIC MANAGEMENT COMPANY COMPLY?

 Pafos Live 20 October 2023

A serious problem in the operation of the biological station of the Pafos Sewerage Board was recorded in the previous period. The accumulation of tons of dried mud caused a stench at a great distance from the station, affecting both Paphos Airport and the tourist area of Geroskipou.

The chairman and members of Parliament's Committee on Energy, Trade, Industry and Tourism were briefed on the problem during an on-site visit and received assurances that it would not occur again.

The private company that manages the Sapa wastewater treatment plant since last year, stored the dried sludge for a few weeks in an empty field, next to the plant, resulting in the very serious problem of stench.

The company has now removed this material with the president of SAPA, Paphos Mayor Phedon Phedonos, warning the company that the board will not tolerate similar failures.

Mr. Phedonos and his colleagues briefed the chairman and the members of the committee on the operation of the plant and the tertiary treatment of wastewater and the production of water used for agricultural purposes.

The chairman of the parliamentary committee on energy, trade, industry and tourism, Kyriakos Hatzigiannis, described the solution of the problem as a positive development. He pointed out, however, that all such plants should make greater use of renewable energy sources for their operation. This plant produces biogas and the aim of the new managers is to install a photovoltaic park unit.

The members of the committee also visited the Community Council of Neo Chorio Pafos where they were informed about the Akamas tourist route which covers the area from the Baths of Aphrodite to the "Karaboulakki Pit".
