KATO PAPHOS - METAL CAGES TO REMAIN IN PLACE

 Pafos Live  24/25 October 2023

The position of the Pafos District Committee of the Green Movement – Citizens' Cooperation (KOSP), regarding the sunshades that have been placed in the port of Kato Pafos, is that these constructions are not aesthetically and culturally compatible with the surrounding area. Therefore, we call on the Pafos Municipal Council, at its meeting tonight, to proceed with a decision for their permanent removal.

The final result of the installation of the metal sunshades was not what they expected, even many of those who, initially, were positively positioned for their installation. Given the high cost of the sunshades, which cost close to €200,000, the recommendation of the Pafos District Committee of the Green Movement – Citizens' Cooperation is on the one hand to remove them and on the other hand to examine the possibility of using them in a part of the city that will be more compatible.

In making this decision, the – initially – negative position of the Department of Antiquities must be taken into account, which also highlights the sober perception of the competent body for the cultural character of the area. The change in the position of the Department of Antiquities raises concerns about possible interventions and pressures exerted to serve a specific narrative.

The unsightly iron structures in the land area of the port of Kato Pafos will not be moved.

This was the decision of the city council taken last night by a majority. A decisive role in the decision was played by the change of position of the Department of Antiquities on the issue, which the Ecologists note "raises concerns about possible interventions and pressures exerted to serve a specific narrative."
