Despite the successive repayment plans implemented by the Republic since 1998 to settle the debts of football clubs/companies to the state, their debts amount to €36 million.
These are tax arrears to the State relating to direct and indirect taxation. A competent source told Phileleftheros that the biggest debts are owed by traditional football clubs that are high in the scoreboard, while some of them have participated in European competitions. In fact, these clubs have a large number of fans and therefore large revenues.
However, following the amendment of the repayment plan last May by the Cabinet, the Tax Commissioner is not going to be lenient to any club. We are told that any football club/company that does not comply with its obligations to the state will be taken out of the new repayment plan. To this end, last July and August, the Commissioner sent stern letters to the clubs/companies, urging compliance with the provisions of the plan.
Normally, the clubs, as per the provisions of the plan, were supposed to deposit their first instalment against their dues on July 31, 2023. A fact that some, it seems, did not do so, so there was an intervention by the Ministry of Finance, giving them an ultimatum.
A relevant source told Phileleftheros that the grace period for the clubs, which will have to comply with the plan, has ended. We were also told that the relevant ministry will not hesitate to take them out of the repayment plan, with all the consequences that entails.
