The news that came to light yesterday concerning the complaint of a 17-year-old Greek Cypriot high school student in Limassol, who claims that she was abducted by a 23-year-old and sexually abused in his home, repeatedly, causes concern. At the same time, there is turmoil in the educational community and not only, the fact that the 23-year-old alleged perpetrator served as a security guard for a few days at the high school where the minor attends.
Investigators from the Vulnerable Persons Management Subdivision of the Police Headquarters handcuffed the 23-year-old, who was brought before the Court last Monday. There, in closed-door proceedings, he was detained for seven days. According to what the minor reported, she was abducted and detained for one night at the suspect's house, involuntarily, with the latter repeatedly sexually abusing her.
The complaint comes to shake up once again the waters regarding the security guards placed in school units, as this guard was in possession of all the necessary certificates and documents from the Police, which are needed for the license to practice the profession. According to "F", the incident took place last Sunday, but the alleged perpetrator worked as a replacement guard at the high school in mid-September and for seven days.
Asked to comment on "F", the President of the Ephorate of Greek Schools of Limassol, Dinos Ellinas, said that it may be time for the criteria set for practicing the profession of security guard to be put in a stricter framework and for people placed in schools to be more controlled.
Regarding the procedure for the prevention of security guards in schools, he indicated that the Limassol School Board has employed a specific company following a tender process. This is a guard who was assigned by the company to replace a permanent guard from 21/9 to 28/9, that is, he worked seven days under the company and the school guard. The incident took place on October 15 and it appears that about a month has passed since this person worked at school."
In addition, he stressed that the Limassol School Board, in the announcement of the competition for the placement of security guards, required the persons who are in the schools to have a license to practice the guard. This person, as Mr. Ellinas mentioned, held all the necessary certificates.
He also stressed that from information received, the suspect was not an employee of the specific company on the day of the incident. "We, as the Limassol School Board, have done the right thing regarding the certificates we have requested and ask for any guard, but also for this one. Perhaps, the existing criteria should be set under stricter frameworks and in order to control workers more," he stressed.
