WILL THE 'ELIAS' SYSTEM AFFECT CYPRUS?

Filenews 26 September 2023 - by Rafaela Dimitriadi

The bad weather "Elias" that has been affecting Greece since Monday morning is not expected to affect Cyprus, as reported to philenews, the Director of the Meteorological Service, Kleanthis Nicolaides.

"We are in the process of rolling out the Elias system but it will not affect us either in intensity or to the extent that it affects Greece," he noted.

In Cyprustemperatures in the previous days, as Mr. Nicolaides pointed out, were noticeably above normal for the season, but a slight drop is expected to reach normal as well as the possibility of local, light rains and an isolated storm.

Regarding his assessment for this winter, Kleanthis Nicolaides said that temperatures seem to be at normal levels for each month and rain is not expected to be at normal levels.

«Due to the significant change recorded in the temperature of the Pacific Ocean Sea, the impact on the Eastern Mediterranean region where Cyprus is located does not have a clear signal to predict what this winter will be like," he noted.

The main feature of the system, according to Mr. Nikolaidis, is the high rainfall heights, which can lead to flooding phenomena. "However, not the amount of rain that the Daniel synoptic system gave." As noted by the Director of Meteorology, yesterday's rainfall heights of the "Elias" system were around 100mm, while those of the "Daniel" system for the same year were over 350mm of rain.
