POSTPONEMENT OF NEW CHRYSOCHOS LINEAR PARK

 Pafos Live 18 September 2023

With the new programming period, the linear park on the river Chrysochos, in the district of Polis, will be executed.

The project has already received the consent of the Environmental Authority, but funds close to two million euros will also be needed, which cannot currently be allocated from national funds. The issue was discussed today by the Prefect of Pafos, Mary Lambrou, with the Mayor of Polis Chrysochous, Yiotis Papachristofis.

The linear park is planned to be created along the bed of the river Chrysochos within the administrative boundaries of the Municipality of Polis Chrysochos and the communities of Chrysochos, Holis, Goudi and Skoullis.

It is noted that the development falls within the Natura
2000 Network area, and concerns the implementation of the design for the creation of a nature study trail along the river Chrysochos, starting from the Community of Skoulli to the estuary of the river, despite the camping site in the Municipality of Polis Chrysochous.

The purpose of the project is to highlight the protected area of Skoullis, to provide environmental information and public awareness on issues of Natura 2000 sites, to visit the area, within a predetermined area (path), so that visitors can enjoy the beauties of nature as they move along the
river, get to know the area and its characteristics with predetermined stopping and recreation points, study nature and generally be able to enjoy the environment, with the ultimate goal of identifying the elements and objects of environmental protection of the area.

The trail will start from the Community of Skoulli and will end almost at the mouth of the river Chrysochos with a total length of about 11 kilometers and a width ranging from 1.20 to 1.50 meters, where it will mainly follow the dirt agricultural roads.

For its construction, small-sized excavation machines will be used in places where access will be allowed (where there will be no water and vegetation). At points of the river with continuous flow, including the bank on both sides and points where wild vegetation is found-plant communities of natural habitat types (eg plane trees, alders, merikoi, rhododendrons, willows, etc.), the work will be done manually (eg cutting reeds by hand).

The main construction works that will be carried out for the proposed projects are:

· Pre-construction works of landscaping.
· Earthworks, excavations (small area).
· Construction of staging points - benches.
· Construction of a playground, sanitary facilities as well as a small pavilion of approximately 70 sq.m., made of concrete, which is located outside the Natura
2000 Network areas.· Construction of
wooden footbridges.
· Construction of parking spaces.
