POLICE OFFICER KILLED TRYING TO REMOVE PEDESTRIAN FROM MOTORWAY

Two people were killed in Friday night in a traffic accident on the Larnaca-Ayia Napa highway near the Rizoelia roundabout.

One of those who died was named as Petros Eleftheriou, 50, a police officer from the Voroklini station. No details were given as yet as to who the second victim was.

According to police, the accident happened at 7.40pm.

“Following information about a person who was moving on foot on the Ayia Napa-Rizoelia highway, members of the special motorcyclist association from the Voroklini police station went to the scene,” a police announcement said.

“When the specific person was spotted on the highway, police officer Petros Eleftheriou parked the patrol car on the hard shoulder. However, in his attempt to remove the person from the road, under circumstances that are being investigated, they were both hit by a passing vehicle driven by a 45-year-old.”

Both victims were taken by ambulance to Larnaca General Hospital but pronounced dead.
