NEW LANDSLIDE IN THE CORE OF PISSOURI CHANGES ALL DATA

Filenews 8 September 2023 - by Ioanna Mantzipia

Not only is the chronic problem of soil subsidence in Pissouri not solved, but on the contrary, it is growing, since the new landslide in the core of the village comes to radically change the data so far.

The issue of the new landslide within the community, as well as the problems presented by the instability of the soil, was discussed in the previous days by the Ministry of Interior, which convened a wide meeting with the ministers of transport and agriculture. The meeting was attended by directors and officers of the Geological Survey Department, the Water Development Department, the Public Works, the Technical Services of the Ministry of Interior and the Limassol District Officer.

They discussed extensively what has happened so far, the problems that exist and those created by the new landslide within the core of the community. As "F" is aware, specific decisions were taken during the meeting and the next steps to be taken were determined. Among other things, it was decided to set up an interministerial committee under the supervision of the Geological Survey Department, which falls under the Ministry of Agriculture.

Due to the new landslide, which appeared two years ago in the core of the community, it has been decided that the Geological Survey Department will prepare a comprehensive study for the entire area of Pissouri. The study will include both the area "Pissouri Lakes", where construction works were carried out, and the core of the village, in order to reveal the magnitude of the problem so that measures can be taken for both areas.

Due to new developments within the community, the Geological Survey Department may also invite a team of experts from abroad for an on-site autopsy. Depending on the findings of the study, which has a timeframe of 8 months, it will become clear whether the partial movement of residents and stabilization of the soil is required where and where necessary. The study will also show how many homes are at risk and whether they should be abandoned.

Regarding the new landslide in the core of the community, abandonment decrees have already been issued for five residences. At the same time, the Limassol District Administration, upon the recommendation of the Geological Survey Department, carries out an inspection of houses affected by instability, with the aim of issuing abandonment decrees where and where the unsuitability of habitation is judged, and consequently, the protection of residents.

Asked to place in "F", the president of the community of Pissouri, Lazaros Lazarou, in relation to the new data and the landslide within the core of the village, noted that there is strong concern among residents. He stressed, however, that he was awaiting an official update from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the decisions taken during the meeting, without wanting to comment on anything else.
