The 13 defendants who were indicted yesterday in direct trial before the Permanent Assize Court of Limassol for the shameful incidents during a protest against immigration are facing serious offences.

Friends of the 13 defendants arrived at the court in support, while at the entrance of the building they posted placards with slogans, "Punish those who bring them, not those who turn them away. Bravo lads" and "For the homeland one deserves to die and do not listen to what the cowards and the sold out say".

Yesterday's proceedings were again held behind closed doors as the accused included two minors. The Court referred the case for trial to the Limassol Assize Court, which is due to meet on 25 October 2023. 11 of the 13 defendants were released on parole. As for the convict who was serving his sentence under electronic surveillance, he was taken back to the Central Prison as an undertrial in this case.

The defendants face the offenses of conspiracy to commit a misdemeanor, rioting, carrying an offensive instrument, racism and xenophobia, causing damage to buildings by rioters, incitement to violence, arson, carrying weapons, assaulting a law enforcement officer, common assault, possession of explosives, malicious damage to property and carrying a knife.

Investigators at the ICF Limassol requested the detention of the 50-year-old alleged organizer of the protest. His lawyer objected. The Court reserved its judgment for today.

According to the indictment, the 50-year-old is alleged to be the person who damaged the glass door of the beach hotel. He also allegedly fostered the formation of the spirit of intolerance. As far as the 2nd defendant is concerned, he is alleged to be the person who set fire to the barber shop of a Syrian, while carrying aggressive instruments with him.

The gang of drugs in cornflakes found twice in a twenty-four hour period in Ayia Napa and Nicosia, with the YKAN making three arrests, including a 17-year-old.

With the assistance of customs authorities, a total of 7.3kg of marijuana was found in cereal packages arriving from Canada. This is the third case of drug detections in cornflakes in a fortnight, which has alarmed authorities after traffickers appear to have found a new route for drug supplies after drug packages from Greece.

The first quantity of drugs was detected on Tuesday by customs authorities after checking a parcel that arrived at the Ayia Napa Post Office. Seven nylon packages containing 4.3kg of cannabis were found on cereal packages. The parcel was in the name of a 19-year-old Greek Cypriot who presented herself at the post office to pick it up. The suspect arrived at the scene in a taxi carrying a 24-year-old asylum seeker from Liberia. The two were arrested by YKAN, which is also seeking a Nigerian asylum seeker. The drugs are believed to have been destined for the tourist area of Ayia Napa, where Africans operate.

On Tuesday afternoon, a 17-year-old from Pakistan went to a post office in Engomi to pick up a parcel of cereal packages that arrived from Canada and was found to contain about 3kg of marijuana. The young man was arrested and investigations began to identify the final recipient of the drugs.

It is recalled that on August 22, after a routine check of postal packages at the Postal Exchange at Larnaka Airport, 3kg of cannabis were found hidden in three packages of cereals. The package had arrived from Canada and was addressed to a foreigner in Paphos, who was arrested.

The YKAN has informed Interpol accordingly, while tests are underway to determine if the recipients of the packages in Cyprus are connected.

The Paphos District Court imposed a 15-month prison sentence on the 74-year-old driver found guilty of the death of 10-year-old schoolgirl Nalina Fakliska in November 2019 in Paphos.

The Pafos District Court recently found guilty the 74-year-old driver of the vehicle that fatally hit the little girl at a controlled pedestrian crossing and has now announced, after the speeches for mitigation of the sentence, its decision.

The 74-year-old was also sentenced to 24 months of driving deprivation and eight penalty points. The court, in its decision to imprison the elderly woman for 15 months, took into account the fact that she immediately realized the serious consequences of the accident she caused.

10-year-old Nalina, originally from Bulgaria, was a student of the Primary School "Pefkios Georgiadis" and at noon on November 22, 2019, she crossed the busy Tassos Papadopoulos Avenue in Paphos, from a pedestrian crossing controlled by traffic lights. A car driven by the then 70-year-old woman dragged the unfortunate little girl who, according to eyewitnesses, used the pedestrian crossing after she had stepped on the traffic light.

These testimonies also vindicate the report of the 10-year-old's grandfather that he accompanied her to the pedestrian crossing and left her only when Nalina pressed the button so that she could cross.
