Filenews

Although driving under the influence of alcohol appears from official figures to be a male "privilege", a 42-year-old woman managed to commit a series of traffic and other offences before she was finally arrested by police.

The 42-year-old was spotted at dawn on Thursday by members of the Paphos Traffic Police, during a motorized patrol, driving her vehicle in the wrong direction on a one-way street.  She underwent a preliminary alcohol test with a reading almost five times the permitted reading, namely 104μg% instead of 22μg%.

The 42-year-old was taken with her vehicle to the Paphos Traffic Police for final testing, where she refused to give a sample. Not only that, but she attacked and beat a member of the police with her hands. As a result, the woman was arrested for a flagrant offence and taken into custody to facilitate interrogations.

A decision of the Supreme Court (first instance jurisdiction) issued last Friday, brings to the fore the control procedures exercised on its members by the Cyprus Bar Association (GPA).

As is apparent from the facts recorded in the contested verdict, a law firm was punished with a fine of  €19,000 by the GPP, following an audit carried out by a competent committee of the Bar Association.

More specifically, the supervision and compliance department of the Cyprus Bar Association Council conducted on-site supervisory audits of the law firm, following notification of the latter, on 19/4/2021, 26/4/2021 and 20/5/2021. These checks were carried out on the basis of the Prevention and Suppression of Money Laundering Activities Law.

On 17/1/2022 the GPP Board issued an indictment. Finally, and after subsequent procedures, the GPP Board imposed a fine of €19,000 on the law firm.

The law firm, which claims, among other things, that the GPP circumvented rules of natural justice in the whole process, appealed to the Supreme Court to extend the deadline to apply for a license to register by summons, with the ultimate goal of issuing a writ of annulment (certiorari), raising a number of arguments. However, Supreme Court Justice Lena Dimitriadou-Andreou rejected the application, justifying her decision in the 11-page verdict.
