The fact that we are not talking about casualties from the explosion that occurred yesterday morning at a metal recycling plant in the industrial area of Aradippou is purely due to chance.
A 68-year-old Greek Cypriot, as well as two factory workers, a European citizen and an African asylum seeker, were injured and other people at the site were in danger. The explosion was caused by an object about 10cm long, carried for recycling by the 68-year-old, with investigations by police and National Guard experts concluding that it was a military grenade from a firing range in Koshi.
The incident happened a few minutes after 7 a.m. The 68-year-old rushed to the factory in a double-cab vehicle from a village in the Nicosia district carrying metals he collected. Incredibly, the object that exploded was placed inside the double cabin, while the rest was in the back, according to testimonies in the possession of the police. The explosion occurred as the pensioner handed over the object to a worker after it hit the ground. The three persons were injured and were immediately transferred to Larnaka Hospital and underwent surgeries. The 68-year-old's health condition is considered more serious, but it does not give cause for concern.
Members of the Aradippou Police Station and members of the Criminal Investigation Service rushed to the area. From the first moment, suspicions of military ammunition were raised and for this reason the assistance of the National Guard was requested, which participated in the investigations with a pyrotechnic. Fragments were taken from the scene, which were sent for scientific examinations in order to identify the object that exploded.
According to "F" information from police sources, the 68-year-old who was injured said that the object that exploded was collected several days ago from the Kourtellos area, which falls within the Vouyes firing range located in Koshi. He reportedly said he believed it was a motor and kept it at home without knowing he and his family were in mortal danger.
It is noted that a National Guard exercise was held at this firing range a few months ago that included the throwing of grenades. It is believed that one of them did not explode and was picked up by the 68-year-old.
