The Forestry Department informs
the public that, due to the mass exodus to the forests for the celebration of
The Assumption of Mary, the risk of forest fires erupting and spreading for
tomorrow, Tuesday, August 15, 2023, remains at the "RED ALERT" level.
A warm appeal is made to the
public, who will be escaping to forest areas, to exercise extreme caution,
completely avoid actions and activities that could potentially cause a fire,
i.e. avoid lighting fires, using power tools that produce sparks or flames,
and throwing cigarette butts and lit matches. Lighting a fire to prepare food
is permitted only in designated areas within picnic sites.
It is stressed that it is
prohibited to light a fire without permission and that it constitutes an
offence which, according to the Forestry Law of 2012, is punishable by
imprisonment for up to 10 years or a fine of up to €50,000.00 or both
penalties together and according to the Prevention of Rural Fires Law of
1988, up to 5 years or a fine of up to €20,000 or both penalties together.
Finally, if anyone notices
smoke or fire they are asked to call 1407 (Forestry Department) or 112 (Fire
Service) immediately.
