HUNTING - WHAT ARE THE FINES FOR ILLEGALITIES?

 Filenews 20 August 2023

Between 18,000 and 19,000 hunters are expected to go out on Sunday when the hunting season begins, Game and Fauna Service spokesman Petros Anagiotos said, noting that teams are carrying out checks in all districts.

According to Mr. Anagiotos, they estimate that more than 18,000 to 19,000 hunters will go out on Sunday to hunt for various birds, filicuttounia, cervix, quail, etc. From September 3, turtle dove hunting will also be allowed, he said.

This hunting season is Sundays until September 17 and two Wednesdays, on September 6 and 13, he said in response to a question.

Mr. Anagiotos said that there are teams for checks, from Saturday night until late Sunday night, in all districts.

He noted that in this period of excursions, two offenses usually arise, that of hunting without a license and hunting in a prohibited area.  Extrajudicial fines start at €2,000 and increase if there are additional offences, he said.

Besides, in an announcement, the Game & Fauna Service wishes all hunters "good and safe hunting" and calls on those who will venture on Sunday 20/8/2023, "to observe all written and unwritten laws of hunting, to show the necessary respect to their colleagues and the foreign properties that will host them". It recalls that the recording of harvest, through the Artemis Cy application, "is mandatory for all game in all hunting seasons".

At the same time, the Service urges hunters, among other things, to avoid sun exposure for a long time, to drink plenty of fluids (water and fruit juices) and avoid the consumption of alcoholic beverages, to avoid hunting alone and always, another person, to know the exact point to hunt, but also to plan in advance how to act or who to contact in case of an unpleasant incident.

It is noted that lighting a fire in non-designated areas is prohibited since under the prevailing weather conditions it is very dangerous to cause a fire.

Finally, hunters are invited, before going out, to study well the permitted hunting areas (through the Artemis Cy application and the relevant maps) and immediately report any illegality they find on the following mobile phones of the Service or to the Police at 1414. For Nicosia 99445697, Limassol 99445728, Larnaca / Famagusta 99634325 and Paphos 99445679.
