CHLORAKAS - 21 ARRESTS LAST NIGHT, PLUS ARREST OF SYRIAN WHO THREATENED TO 'TURN PAFOS UPSIDE DOWN'

 Pafos Live 29 August 2023

The police in Chloraka acted decisively last night by dispersing a gathering of young Greek Cypriots who intended to attack Syrians living in the area.

In the area, after the completion of the protest organized by about 500 Syrians at the entrance of the community and their departure, minor incidents broke out when young Greek Cypriots who had gathered elsewhere in the community tried to move to neighbourhoods where Syrians live. They burned a small number of garbage cans and part of a fence.

The strong police force, which was in the area early on, fearing incidents by Syrians , moved quickly, cutting off the roads to the youths, whom they hunted even through fields and empty plots.

The police used tear gas and proceeded to a total of 21 arrests of both Greek Cypriots and Syrians for both the incidents and the possession of offensive instruments.

Despite apologising for public threats made by 47-year-old Syrian Mohammed Hadjihussein, he was arrested by police last night.

An arrest warrant was pending against him for the public threats he made yesterday that if the state did not take measures and bring to justice those who attacked his compatriots, Syrians would turn Pafos upside down, according to him.

His apology was not, as it seemed sincere, since a few minutes later he provoked another incident, when Syrians left their protest.

He verbally attacked police officers whom he threatened and was arrested for a flagrant offense, along with other compatriots who also possessed offensive instruments in the vehicle they were transporting.
