Filenews 12 July 2023
Today, July 12, 2023, another transfer of asylum seekers from the Republic of Cyprus to France took place, through the voluntary relocation scheme.
Specifically, an additional 51 asylum seekers were relocated, in the framework of cooperation between the Ministry of Interior and the French authorities, with the support of the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Transfers of people, through this programme aimed at supporting frontline Member States facing increased migratory challenges, will continue in the period ahead.
The next flight is expected to be on July 19, from Cyprus to Norway, where around 40 people are expected to be transferred.
Reimbursements against arrivals
At the same time, the positive balance in the number of departures of migrants from Cyprus against the number of inflows continues.
For the first time in many years, as a result of the coordinated actions and measures taken recently, the total number of migrants who left Cyprus is greater than the total number of migrants who entered.
Specifically, in the last quarter of April – June 2023, while 2,381 asylum applications were submitted, 2,714 migrants left Cyprus (through voluntary relocation to other member states, voluntary returns or deportation to their country of origin).
In June, 735 asylum applications were submitted, while 926 third-country nationals left Cyprus (through voluntary relocation to other Member States, voluntary returns or deportation to their country of origin).
