An arson attack on a stolen car caused a brush fire that destroyed a hectare of wild vegetation near the old Paphos-Limassol road in the early hours of Sunday, police said.

The blaze was reported around 3.30am near the village of Ayia Varvara and was extinguished by the fire brigade.

The vehicle was completely destroyed.

Subsequent investigations by the police revealed that the Honda Civic had been reported stolen by its owner, a resident of Paphos on July 28.

Investigations at the scene began at first light.

A number of duty-free tobacco and dairy products were found and confiscated today by members of the Nicosia OPE and the Department of Customs.

The duty-free goods were found during a search of a barber shop in Nicosia owned by a 73-year-old man.

Specifically, during the search, 200 pieces of duty-free heated cigarettes, 2800 pieces of cigarettes, one kilogram of manufactured tobacco, and six kilos of dairy products were found and seized.

The 73-year-old, in whose presence the investigation was conducted, was arrested by a Customs and Excise officer and after being fined, he was released.

The arrest of two drivers, who were found driving their vehicles at excessive speed, on the Nicosia-Larnaka highway, proceeded during the last night, the Police.

One of the two arrests was eventful, since the driver of the vehicle failed to stop for inspection and was pursued by members of the Road Accident Prevention Unit (OPOD).

Specifically, around 12:20 a.m. Today, members of the OPOD, who were conducting a speed check on the Nicosia-Larnaka motorway, spotted a car moving at a speed of 210 kilometers instead of 100, which is the maximum allowed limit.

The driver was signaled to stop for a check, but he continued on his way. The members of the Police followed the vehicle and managed to intercept it, despite the exit of Oroklini, on the Larnaka – Ayia Napa highway.

A subsequent check revealed that the driver of the vehicle was a 29-year-old resident of a village in the Nicosia district.

The 29-year-old was arrested for a flagrant offence. He was taken to Aradippou Police Station, where he was charged in writing and released. Tomorrow, July 31, he is expected to appear at the Larnaca District Court, for immediate registration of the case against him.

A few hours earlier, around 11 p.m., during a speed check by members of the Organization of Urban Railways on the Nicosia-Larnaka motorway, a car was spotted moving at a speed of 194 kilometers.

Members of the Police stopped the vehicle for inspection. The driver of the vehicle was a 20-year-old resident of a village in the Nicosia district, who was arrested for a flagrant offence.

He was then taken to Aradippou Police Station, where, after being charged in writing, he was released. Tomorrow, July 31, he is expected to appear at the Larnaca District Court, for immediate registration of the case against him.

Police arrested a 21-year-old Limassol resident yesterday to facilitate investigations into an ongoing case of theft, car theft and illegal possession of property.

The case was reported to the Police yesterday afternoon by a 76-year-old resident of Limassol. According to the police, according to the complainant, yesterday morning, he had gone to a restaurant in a seaside location in Limassol. Between the hours of 10.25am And at 10:45 a.m., he left his bag in a chair in the restaurant and went swimming, and when he returned he found that the bag had been stolen.

Inside the bag, according to the 76-year-old, were his mobile phone, his house key and his car key.

Subsequently, the complainant found that his car, which was parked in the parking lot of the restaurant, was also stolen.

During the investigation of the case, information was received to the Police that the specific vehicle was seen parked on a Limassol road, while a man was trying to drive it. Members of the Police immediately went to the scene, where they located the car and the person in question.

He was found to be a 21-year-old man in whose possession part of the stolen property was found. The 21-year-old was arrested for a flagrant offence and taken to the offices of the ICF of Limassol, where he was later re-arrested under a court warrant and taken into custody to facilitate interrogations.

The ICF Limassol continues the examinations.
