CRIME ROUND UP

 Filenews 18 July 2023

He thought they wouldn't discover the theft inside the Limassol casino, but a 37-year-old man from Syria, who resides legally in the Republic under subsidiary protection, miscalculated. The Syrian stole a mobile phone he found on a gaming machine and ended up in detention.

According to "F" information, the incident took place last Wednesday night when a citizen had gone to the casino to try his luck at slot machines. The complainant, after sitting at a gaming machine for a while, then departed. He forgot, however, his mobile phone. After 10 minutes, the 37-year-old took his place on this particular machine and after realizing that there was a mobile phone on it, he did not hesitate to steal it, putting it in his pants pocket. He then left the place.

The complainant realized that he forgot the mobile phone and returned back to collect it, but did not locate it. He then filed a complaint with the casino's security staff and after checking the CCTV system, the 37-year-old was found to have stolen it. Casino officials entered the perpetrator's details into the security system in order to locate him.

After four years, the 37-year-old went back to the casino to gamble, but luck was not on his side. Not only did he not enter the casino, but he ended up at the Episkopi Police Station on suspicion of stealing a mobile phone.  Specifically, upon entering, he underwent a facial recognition check and then it was found that his details had been placed in the suspects' system. The casino's security officers were immediately informed and the surveillance cameras identified and identified the 37-year-old as the person who stole the complainant's mobile phone. Police rushed to the scene, which inspected the closed circuit, and then the 37-year-old was taken to Episkopi Station and arrested after an official complaint for the crime of theft.

Yesterday (17/7), the 37-year-old was brought before the Limassol Court, which ordered his detention for two days. Under questioning, he initially denied guilt, but later changed his stance and admitted that he stole the mobile phone which he handed over to the members of the police.
