CRIME ROUND UP

A chase that lasted for about 15 minutes took place last night in the coastal area of Paphos. Members of the Paphos Traffic Police Team G managed to stop and arrest two Georgians who were in the vehicle and who are suspected of burglary and theft.

The motorcycle police officers of group Z signalled last night to a saloon vehicle driver to stop for control on the coastal Poseidonos Avenue. A second person was in the vehicle. The driver refused to comply with police signals and developed speed by driving recklessly and dangerously.

The police chased him and the driver of the vehicle in his attempt to flee endangered the lives of citizens after violating traffic lights, climbing sidewalks and dividing islands. Eventually, police fired warning shots into the air and the two Georgians were arrested near the Geroskipou sports center.

Burglary tools were found in their possession and the driver tested positive for a drug test. Tests will be carried out today to determine which burglaries are involved.

The owner of a privately owned residence in the area of Polis Chrysochous from which money and gold were stolen a few days ago with a total value of more than€70,000 was arrested by the police, along with three of his friends.

They are accused of kidnapping a 25-year-old man, also a Greek Cypriot, and beating him. The victim, who regularly engages the authorities with burglary and theft cases, was considered by the owner of the residence as a suspect in the burglary at his residence. According to the complaint made to the police by the young Greek Cypriot, a few hours after the burglary, the owner of the residence and three of his friends grabbed him by force and dragged him into a vehicle.

He was then taken to various isolated areas and beaten to confess to the burglary, in which he denies having any involvement. He was finally released and filed a complaint with the police.

The alleged kidnappers are expected to be brought before the Pafos court for detention orders.

An expatriate who had been wanted for days in connection with cases of burglary and theft in the area of Pegeia, was located and arrested last night.

The Greek expatriate has been linked to scientific testimony on at least two occasions, while his participation in other similar cases is not excluded.

 A Bulgarian permanent resident of Paphos was arrested by the police.

He was in possession of burglary tools and a bicycle that was found stolen from a residential yard in the previous days.

In the context of investigating seven (7) different cases of attempted destruction of property, committed between the dates 25/4 – 4/7/2023 in the Limassol district, the Police proceeded yesterday, based on a court warrant, to the arrest of one person.

This is a 32-year-old man who was detained to facilitate interrogations.

In a search of his car, various documents were located and received, which will be sent for scientific examinations.

Under questioning, the 32-year-old appears to have admitted to committing the attempted destruction of property, which occurred at a premises on 23/06/2023 in the Limassol district.


Update - The 32-year-old man arrested for the bombings committed in the last two months in Limassol was brought before the Limassol District Court for a request for detention.

As it became known, the suspected interrogator confessed to planting and detonating 7 bombs. He also admitted that he would fit another one in a specific vehicle. The detention process took place behind closed doors at the request of the investigators of the ICF of Limassol. The Court ordered the suspect to be detained for a period of 8 days

According to information from Philenews, yesterday around 11:00 in the morning information was received that in the courtyard of the kindergarten SKE Agios Tychonas, there was a suspicious object. Members of the Germasogeia Police Station rushed to the scene for examinations, but the object was not located.

Members of the ICF of Limassol also arrived at the spot for investigations, where during the examinations information was received that a suspicious rental vehicle was moving at the spot. From the examinations, the person in charge of the ICF of Limassol located the specific vehicle near the scene and from the visual inspection made on it, it was found that on the floor of the vehicle there was a suspicious object that resembles the one mentioned in the information.

As Philenews is informed by further inspection of the vehicle, an electric scooter was found, similar to the scooter that the perpetrator used according to testimonies to go in three different cases to the places where bombs had been placed and detonated.

Under questioning, the 32-year-old confessed to committing seven bombings, while the bomb found in his vehicle said it was intended to be placed in a specific vehicle in Limassol. He also admitted to placing the explosive devices on the instructions of another person and receiving a reward.

He initially said he took €1,000 for the first bomb and then €300 for the rest. In the hands of the investigators of the ICF of Limassol are various items found in the possession of the suspect.

Police investigations are continuing to identify the mastermind, the person who paid the 32-year-old to place and detonate explosive devices. It should be noted that among the cases is the bomb in Maria Cacoyannis' vehicle, which is used by her mother. The bombing was committed on April 25, 2023.

A total of 17 migrants arrived in the free province of Famagusta.

Specifically, at around 01:40 today, after the radar of the Republic detected an unknown target at a distance of 8 nautical miles southeast of Cape Greco moving towards the coast of the Republic, a vessel of the Port and Maritime Police approached an unknown boat, which was found to be black fiberglass 6 meters long, with 17 people on board, of which 13 men, 2 women and 2 children, all from Syria.

They said they departed Tartus, Syria, on Tuesday, July 11, paying three to three and a half thousand dollars each to an unknown person. The boat along with the migrants were taken to the Golden Coast fishing shelter in Paralimni and during their interrogation testimony was secured against two people, aged 48 and 35, that they were the pilots of the boat.

The two people were arrested in the morning by members of the Famagusta ICF for flagrant offenses and within the day arrest warrants are expected to be obtained for the offences of illegal entry into the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, aiding illegal entry of third country persons into the Republic, assisting a third country person with intent and with the aim of obtaining profit and conspiracy to commit a felony.

The remaining migrants are expected to be transferred to the Pournara Temporary Accommodation Centre in Kokkinotrimithia. Tomorrow the two men will be brought before the Famagusta District Court for detention orders. The case is being investigated by the Famagusta ICF.
