BURGLARIES AND THEFTS ON THE RISE IN THE COUNTRYSIDE

Filenews 25 July 2023

Residents living in the countryside seem to have lost their sleep due to the increased cases of theft and burglary recorded recently.

The perpetrators seem to be well thought out about when and where to "hit", while in most cases their prey, apart from money, is various objects and even alcoholic beverages.

From the number of cases dealt with by the authorities for this year, it is found that incidents of theft and burglary are increased compared to previous years. Indeed, one of the reasons for the outbreak is due to the increase of the population and the premises in the Limassol district. The perpetrators choose homes that are isolated from the rest of the community, with authorities not ruling out the possibility that it is an organized gang.

The issue, according to "F", was recently discussed at a meeting held with the leadership of the force at the Police Headquarters, in the presence of the Minister of Justice, Anna Koukkidou Prokopiou. The meeting decided to take more drastic measures to address the problem, such as increasing patrols in the countryside.

The burglary incidents have also upset citizens who own holiday homes, with many rushing to install CCTV in an attempt to deter would-be thieves. In fact, if the perpetrators do not find valuables or money, they steal everything they find in their path, from food to bottles of alcoholic beverages.

The issue was extensively discussed at a pan-community gathering, which took place yesterday in the community of Kyperounta in the presence of the Minister of Justice. During the meeting, measures to tackle and combat burglaries and thefts were discussed, in cooperation between the police authorities and the communities and residents of the countryside. In addition, the upgrading of the institution of the "neighbourhood observer" as well as the observer for forest fires in the countryside was discussed.
