The fireworks were illegal and no permit was issued by the competent authority, which is the Mines Service, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment said in a statement on the recent incidents of fires caused by illegal fireworks.
As mentioned in the announcement, according to the current legislation, the licensing process for fireworks is specific and is done with the safety of the public and the surrounding area as well as the proper use by specially trained and certified persons.
It is noted that during the process of examining each application for fireworks, there is full cooperation with the Fire Service, the Police and all co-competent Services and Authorities.
In addition, it is added, the Mines Service has continuously posted the program of licensed castings on its website for public information.
Especially during the summer months, when there is a high risk of fire, fireworks in the open air are strictly prohibited.
Furthermore, it is noted that, following instructions from the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Petros Xenofontos, the procedure for amending the Explosives Legislation has already begun, with the aim of introducing a relevant provision for the imposition of an extrajudicial fine of €10,000 as well as other stricter regulations to combat illegal fireworks.
