POLICE AT CROSSINGS TO TEMPORARILY KEEP DOCUMENTS OF THIRD-COUNTRY NATIONALS

Police at the divided island’s crossings will be keeping residence documents of third-country nationals who are employed in the Cyprus Republic till their daily visit to the breakaway northern area is concluded.

This is a measure aiming to stop an apparent rising number of third-country domestic helpers and workers leaving the EU-member island for other European countries via the non-recognized Tymbou airport, Philenews reports.

Insiders said that – for years now – a number of Cypriot employers who pay hefty fees for residence and work permits for third-country nationals are taken advantage of.

Specifically, shortly after they start working in the Republic they cross over to the breakaway north which is controlled by Turkey since its 1974 invasion.

They then fly to EU member states – primarily Portugal and Austria – since they have a valid union document secured from the Cyprus authorities.
