Four years have passed since the implementation of the General Health System, the implementation of which was characterized as the greatest social achievement.
The GHS was implemented having as main objectives the universal coverage of the population, the equal treatment of all beneficiaries, the provision of a comprehensive package of health care services, the free choice of health care provider by the beneficiary and social solidarity.
The first phase of the GHS began on June 1, 2019 with the provision of outpatient health services, while on June 1, 2020, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the second phase was implemented with the provision of inpatient health services.
The revenues of the General Health System Fund (GHS) derive from contributions, supplements, contributions, donations and bequests, revenues from the Organization's assets and any other income arising from the activities of the Organization.
According to the data of the Audit Office, by September 2022, approximately 927,000 beneficiaries had registered with the GHS and in a list of Personal Doctors, while at the same time 2,036 Special Doctors, 592 Personal Doctors for adults, 201 Personal Doctors for children, 160 laboratories, 1,491 other Health Professionals, 188 Nurses, 710 Dentists, 8 Accident and Emergency Departments (TAEP) had contracted with the HIO, 60 hospitals and 595 pharmacies.
Four years after the implementation of the GHS, key challenges for the operation of the system are the control and supervision of the use of the system, the integration of innovative medicines, medical audit, but also the treatment of waiting lists.
The Health Insurance Organisation (HIO), the organisation established for the implementation of the GHS, will hold a press conference today for an assessment and assessment of the GHS.
