Emails falsely present the Cyprus Police as the sender, said the Head of the Office for Combating Electronic Crime, Andreas Anastasiades, recommending that in case of receiving such messages, citizens inform the Police and avoid any communication or transaction through the same messages and the addresses mentioned in them.
As he explained, the emails are sent from fake email addresses and include letters bearing logos of the Cyprus Police and Interpol. Emails and letters name persons, such as the Assistant Attorney General, while Police Chief Stelios Papatheodorou is falsely presented as the sender.
The emails and letters also state that the recipients are involved and should be charged with various criminal offenses, including internet offenses, child pornography, and rape.
Mr. Anastasiades said that "there have been several reports recently from many internet users that they have received such messages, while in some isolated cases some amounts of money were paid, not very large."
«This is a scam. Under no circumstances do the police send such messages. The public must be very careful not to respond, not to pay any amount of money written in the letter," he said.
As the Police, Mr. Anastasiades said, we are conducting an investigation to see the source of origin and we will act accordingly.
