The complaint of two boys aged 9 and 4, who for six whole months went through hell from their mother's cohabitant, who allegedly brutally abused them, even wounding one child with a knife, cannot be accommodated in a human mind.

The mother, who was allegedly present when the children, who are now in the care of the Social Welfare Services,  were abused was also arrested in the case.

The two defendants were referred yesterday to a direct trial before the Permanent Assize Court, which will meet in Larnaca on July 27. However, despite the request of the Police to keep the alleged perpetrator in custody, for the purpose of protecting the victims, the Larnaca District Court released him, conditionally, which caused many questions and great discomfort in the ranks of the Force.

The defendant, who is a Greek Cypriot, according to "F" information, faces very serious offences arising from the legislation against torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, injury, causing actual bodily harm, common assault, cruelty to a child under 16 years of age and mental harm.

According to the testimonies before the Police, the offences were committed between January and June 2023 in the district of Larnaka. The mother's cohabitant allegedly used means and methods of torturing the children, who gave a videotaped statement to the police, with the 9-year-old boy giving details. According to the complaint, the defendant brutally beat the two children almost every night, sometimes locking the 9-year-old in a very small warehouse with a dog, taking him out in the cold in the winter as punishment, and in one case allegedly wounding him with a knife in the leg.

The cohabitant and mother, aged 36 and 39 respectively, were arrested on June 14. The 36-year-old was remanded in custody twice for four days, while the mother, who also faces serious offences, cited health reasons and was not remanded in custody.

Yesterday they appeared before the court, which put them on trial, ordering that the 36-year-old also be released on parole. He was reportedly ordered to deposit €10,000 as collateral, hand over his travel documents, report three times a week at a police station, and have his name placed on the stop list. In addition, he was forbidden to approach the two children less than 100 meters away, while a decree was issued to exclude both from the family home.
