CRIME ROUND UP

 Filenews 16 June 2023

Another dissuasive sentence related to violence in stadiums was imposed last Monday. The Nicosia district court sentenced a 23-year-old man to 5 months in prison and issued a decree excluding him from competitions, events, or sports venues for a period of six months from the day of his release.

The young man during the football match between Omonia and APOEL on February 15, 2023, threw a lighter towards the referee. He was arrested the next day by the Police and a criminal case was registered against him for the offences of throwing dangerous objects and assault "due to or connected with a match or event" in violation of the Prevention and Suppression of Violence in Sports Venues Law, as well as for the offence of common assault.

The 23-year-old pleaded guilty to all charges. The court notes in its judgment: "[...] Taking all the facts of the present case seriously, I consider that this is a case where the need for a dissuasive sentence cannot be undermined by the personal circumstances of the accused and his mitigating circumstances.

Besides, where the public interest imposes the need for strict and dissuasive treatment of the offender by the court, the personal circumstances of an accused are not sufficient to differentiate that need, and I recall in this regard that those who commit violence on the pitch should not expect the clemency of the court."
