CRIME ROUND UP

 Filenews 14 June 2023

Police last night proceeded on the basis of a court warrant to arrest a person as part of an investigation into a case of illegal importation and possession of drugs.

This is a 34-year-old man who was detained to facilitate interrogations.

The arrest of the 34-year-old was preceded by a check by customs officers on a package that arrived in Cyprus the previous days from another European country.

Tests showed that the package in question contained cannabis resin weighing approximately 100 grams.

Further examinations revealed that the package would end up in a post office box in Limassol, which belongs to the 34-year-old.

A search of the 34-year-old's home based on a court warrant found a small amount of cannabis, weighing about 1.4 grams.

The YKAN (Limassol Unit) continues the examinations.

The Limassol Assize Court yesterday imposed an 11-year prison sentence for sexually abusing children under the age of 13 against a 67-year-old Greek Cypriot. This is another shocking case involving two minor siblings, aged 6 and 8, with the offences committed in 2016 at the defendant's residence.

The case is appalling, as the minor children, in addition to the abuse they suffered for a long time by the accused, were neglected by their own mother. The latter, according to "F's" information, had an intermittent love affair with the accused, who, taking advantage of the whole situation, abused the two brothers when they lived with him, while everyone was absent from his residence.

The facts of the case are horrifying, with the accused, in addition to the abuse against minors, allegedly turning into witnesses of the sexual abuse suffered by each child. That is, he forced one child to watch the abuse he caused to his sibling and vice versa.

The same information states that the case was reported in 2019, after the two brothers decided to talk about the horrific experiences to an officer of a competent authority. The defendant did not admit to the charges he was facing and the Limassol Permanent Assize Court found him guilty after a court hearing on 12 counts of sexual abuse of minors.

Yesterday, following the court's 11-year sentence, the defendant broke down in tears. It should be noted that all this time before the sentencing, he was free on parole.
