The route of the new large quantity of drugs found by members of the YKAN in cooperation with members of the Customs Department of Pafos airport, is described in a statement by the 29-year-old Bulgarian, in whose luggage about 20 kilos of drugs were found. According to what he told the police, due to financial problems, he volunteered to transport the shipment of drugs to Cyprus. Based on his claim, his compatriots initially gave him €800 euros and a mobile phone on which he received electronic instructions and plane tickets.
He first travelled to Madrid where he received the drugs airside and then through Budapest arrived at Paphos airport last night with one kilogram of cocaine and 19 kilos of cannabis in his luggage. On the way he had received another €1500 euros and when he was arrested he was in possession of €1700 euros and a mobile phone.
The 29-year-old Bulgarian, who refuses to name the people to whom he would deliver the drugs in Cyprus, faces charges of illegal importation, possession with intent to supply class A and B drugs and money laundering, all of which carry heavy prison sentences.
Police believe that on the flight from Budapest to Cyprus there were other members of the ring who discreetly monitored the Bulgarian, while investigations will be carried out abroad in cooperation with Interpol and Europol to identify the masterminds of the ring.
