TOTAL SALARIES IN NEW MUNICIPALITIES WILL BE AROUND €6million

 Filenews 26 May 2023

[NB - Tala is not a Municipality.  It is a community  and will remain a community which means that the mukhtar receives a small salary and the council members are unpaid]

Take note to know the salaries of how many rulers you will be paying as part of the Local Government reform:

Twenty mayors, 93 deputy mayors and 442 municipal councillors, who will have a total annual salary of approximately €6 million annually.

As expected, the highest salaries will have the mayors especially of the large Municipalities (Nicosia, Lakatamia, Strovolos, Limassol, East Limassol, Larnaka, Paphos and Paralimni-Deryneia) with the annual salaries of each one skyrocketing to €77,656. In the medium-sized municipalities (Latsia-Geri, Polemidia, West Limassol, Aradippou, Meneou-Dromolaxia, East Paphos, Polis Chrysochous and Agia Napa) the salaries are set at €61,125 per year. The mayors of poorer municipalities (Athienou and Akamas) will have a salary of €54,359 and, finally, the mayor of the poorest municipality, which is the Municipality of Lefkara, will have an annual salary of €46,593.

More specifically, the mayors of large Municipalities (as recorded above based on data submitted before Parliament) will have a salary of €48,616, plus €4,051 as the 13th salary, plus an appearance allowance of €24,989. The monthly salary of each of these Mayors will be €5,953.

The remaining mayors, depending on the categories listed above, will have monthly salaries of €4,778, €4,181 and €3,584.

And while mayors' salaries do not differ from what was provided for in the initial legislation of the reform (Municipalities Law 2022), in the salaries of deputy mayors scissors fall up to €1,792 per month. This reduction concerns only the deputy mayors of the communities of Tserkezos (with 32 voters), Akrounta (368 voters), Mathikoloni (161 voters), Finikaria (343 voters) and Armenochori (181 voters). The salary of deputy mayors of other communities is not reduced at all or reduced from €597 to €1,434.

It is noted that according to the government's proposal, deputy mayors who will come from the 63 communities incorporated in the new municipalities and have up to 500 voters will receive 20% of the mayor's salary, between 501-1,000 voters will be paid 30% of the mayor's salary and from 1,001 voters and more than 50% of the mayor's salary. Several community leaders are already opposing and pressure is being exerted to restore the original regime or to set the minimum wage at 30%. However, the interior minister had indicated before the parliamentary interior committee that it was not fair for a deputy mayor of a community of 30 voters to receive the same salary as a deputy mayor whose area includes thousands of voters.
