After smoking controls in nightclubs and catering establishments were relaxed and ashtrays returned to closed spaces, they resumed with joint raids by the Police and Health Services. According to the Police, as of April 28, 2023, a nationwide campaign has begun with officers of the Health Services to combat the phenomenon of smoking indoors.
The campaign will last until Saturday, June 17, 2023, in order to implement the Health Protection Law. During the campaign, checks will be carried out, mainly during night hours, especially on Friday and Saturdays, in nightclubs, as well as in places where smoking is prohibited.
Persons who are found to be in violation of the relevant Legislation are subject to the provisions of the Law. The public is reminded that the out-of-court regulation for offenders (regulars) amounts to 85 euros, while the owners or managers of recreation centers are also denounced.
The issue of tobacco controls was also raised in reports by the Auditor General, since there had been a decrease in all provinces, especially during the coronavirus pandemic. The police indicated that the issue of smoking control is not among their immediate tasks and that other agencies that could be involved are involved.
