Sentences of several years in prison were imposed today on two women, aged 42 and 33, following a trial by the Larnaca Permanent Assize Court, of a case of import and possession of a large quantity of drugs, namely a quantity of 12 kilos and 844 grams of cannabis plant matter. The Permanent Assize Court sentenced the 42-year-old to five years in prison and the 33-year-old to 12 years.
The large quantity of cannabis was detected in January, 2023, following international cooperation between the authorities of Cyprus and Greece and in particular the Hellenic Police, the Cyprus Police, and the Department of Customs and Excise (Police Bulletin No. 4, dated 02/02/2023, relevant).
Specifically, on January 27, 2023, in cooperation with the Hellenic Police and other Services abroad, three parcels destined for Cyprus were found in a courier company, containing a total of 13 kg and 905 grams of cannabis plant matter of gross weight.
The two parcels were addressed to the 33-year-old, while the third parcel was to the 42-year-old.
Subsequently, in cooperation between the Anti-Narcotics Service and the Customs Authorities of the Republic of Cyprus, a coordinated operation was carried out, which resulted in the arrest of the 33-year-old and the 42-year-old, during the process of receiving the packages from the offices of the courier company.
Laboratory tests performed on the quantity of cannabis, it was found that it was of a net weight of 12 kg and 844 grams.
The case had been investigated by the YKAN (Larnaka District Unit).
