EMBASSY OF UKRAINE FOR EVENTS OF RUSSIAN ORGANISATION

 Filenews 8 May 2023

The Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Cyprus, in a statement, expresses deep disappointment that permission has been given to the so-called "Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots of Cyprus" to organize a series of events in various cities of Cyprus, in honour of the victims of the Second World War.

Specifically, public events entitled "Fire of Remembrance" are organized in the cities of Larnaka, Limassol and Nicosia, sponsored by the pro-Kremlin movement "All-Russian Popular Front".

The conduct of such activities in a European country by an organization included in the EU sanctions list is not only a sign of disregard by the Russian authorities for European legislation but also a brazen attempt to involve the competent municipal and law enforcement services of the Republic of Cyprus in a deliberate violation of EU decisions. reports the Embassy of Ukraine in Nicosia.

At a time when Ukraine has been fighting for its right to exist for nine years and its courageous people are fighting every day for a peaceful democratic future not only for their citizens but for the whole of Europe, we consider that the granting of permission to hold public meetings in the Republic of Cyprus by an organisation which has been banned on EU territory, it is a cynical and immoral gesture towards all Ukrainians.

In this extremely difficult time for our country, most European countries have clearly defined their position regarding their support for Ukraine and its citizens and stood on the side of truth and light. The political leadership of the Republic of Cyprus has repeatedly strongly condemned Russia's full military invasion of the territory of Ukraine and has been and remains in solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

Once again, the Embassy of Ukraine calls on the municipal and competent authorities of the Republic of Cyprus to pay particular attention to the activities of the so-called "Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots of Cyprus" and to carefully investigate the main objective and occasion of future activities of the Council.
