A ring of illegal trade in rare wild birds of prey appears to have been dismantled by the Game and Fauna Service in cooperation with the Police.

Specifically, following the collection and utilization of specific data for illegal trade in wild birds, yesterday afternoon a search was carried out, following a court warrant, at the home of a specific person from a municipality of the Nicosia District. During the search, two buzzard chicks were located and confiscated, which were in a paper bag and appear to have been detached, very recently, from a nest in the wild. At this point it is worth noting that, from information received by our Service from time to time, in the illegal trade of wildlife species, these species of birds can be sold for a price of a few thousand euros. At the same time, it is noted that the population of the buzzard, in Cyprus, a few years ago, was at very low levels and due to the many years of efforts of both our Service and other State Services and Non-Governmental Organizations, the population of the species has recovered significantly.

In addition, during the above search, one frozen full-coated hare, twenty-two frozen full-fledged filikotounia, eight frozen wild birds of the sylvidae family, nineteen limesticks and two hunting firearms were located and confiscated.
