ALMOST 800 COMPLAINTS FOR TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS OVER 2 DAY PERIOD

A total of 744 out-of-court complaints for various traffic offenses resulted from traffic road checks, by members of the Special Motorcycle Squad (EOMO), the Road Accident Prevention Squads (OPOD) of Headquarters and Avdimou and members of the District Traffic Police Branches, on motorways and on the secondary road network all over Cyprus.

The Pancyprian traffic police checks were carried out from the morning hours of Saturday 29/04/2023 until 6am today, Monday 01/05/2023, in the context of the prevention of road traffic collisions, the prevention and suppression of nuisance offences by cars and motorcycles and juvenile delinquency.

The majority of complaints concerned offences, which are proven to be the main causes of serious and fatal road collisions. Of these, 400 complaints for exceeding the speed limit and 61 complaints for driving under the influence of alcohol stand out.

It is also worth mentioning the complaints made concerning vehicles driven without registration certificates, which amount to 78, but also without certificates of suitability amounting to 25 out-of-court complaints. There were also 23 complaints about non-use of seat belts by vehicle occupants in the front and rear seats. In addition, another 157 out-of-court complaints for various other traffic offences emerged.

Moreover, in a campaign by the Famagusta Traffic Police for the prevention of road collisions and the suppression of traffic offences, which took place between the hours of 2pm -12 midnight yesterday in Ayia Napa, seven vehicles (4 cars, 1 moped and 2 motorcycles) were seized for various traffic offences. The members of the Famagusta traffic police made a total of 76 traffic complaints, including 4 complaints for forgery of a driver's license and use of a false driver's license, 3 for driving with an expired student driver's license, 5 for worn tires and 2 for driving a stationary vehicle.

During the checks, 6 persons who were staying illegally in the territory of the Republic of Cyprus were also identified and arrested.

Targeted traffic checks continue daily, around the clock, throughout the road network all over Cyprus. The sole objective is to establish proper road awareness by all road users and to prevent fatal and serious road collisions.
