Pafos Live 22 April 2023
The black spots of the road network of the Pafos district are highlighted by a CyBC survey. According to data from the traffic studies branch of the Public Works Department, most fatal accidents in the last twenty years occurred on two roads in the province, the coastal road Paphos-Coral Bay and the road Polis Chrysochous-Pomos.
These two coastal roads of the province recorded the most fatal accidents in the last twenty years. According to transportation expert Neophytos Zavridis, the reasons for causing fatal accidents on these two roads, apart from the responsibility of the drivers, have to do with the calls of the road surface, their slippery, due to the proximity to the sea, the poor lighting and the lack of sidewalks, but also to the straight and sharp turns in the roads in some places.
Many fatal road collisions, according to data from the traffic studies branch, have also been recorded on the road Tombs of the Kings – Coral Bay and mainly between the fifth to sixth kilometre of the road at the boundaries of the communities of Chlorakas and Kissonerga.
Across the Pafos district between 2005 and 2022, 142 people lost their lives in road collisions. An average village in Cyprus has disappeared from the map. The most fatal accidents, 23 were recorded in 2005 and the fewest 3 in 2017. In the last decade the number of victims has been in single digits every year. The loss, however, is still heavy for the size of Cyprus and especially the province.
The Department of Public Works, studying the data of road collisions at various points of the road network, constantly takes corrective measures in order to reduce serious road collisions. Frequent fatal road collisions were also recorded on Mesogi Avenue, Mesogi-Polis Chrysochous road and Paphos-Limassol motorway.
Road collisions with serious injuries and damages are also recorded mainly at junctions, intersections but also at roundabouts within the city of Pafos and mainly on Dimokratias, Anexartisias, Eleftherios Venizelos, Europa, Yiannou Kranidiotis, Athens and Apostolou Pavlou and Agioi Anargyroi avenues.
