Two renowned British lawyers will assist the island’s Independent Authority against Corruption in their bid to audit a number of law firms’ involvement in the now-terminated golden passports’ scheme.
This is what Philenews reported on Friday, adding that the two seasoned litigators have represented governments in the past. And that they had absolutely no contact with anyone involved with Cyprus’ controversial golden passports scheme.
The two will be joined by three Cypriot lawyers or auditors who also had or have no connection with those involved in the passport-issuing scheme.
The terms of reference for the team are currently being drafted so that they can be formally be appointed and get to work before the end of May, Philenews also reported.
Insiders said the two British lawyers will be coming and going to Cyprus while the interrogation of those involved will be undertaken by them as they are very experienced in such methods.
Even the Limassol-based former law firm of ex-president Nicos Anastasiades will come under their radar in connection with the scheme.
The British choice was not a coincidence considering the fact that they have the same criminal system and investigation procedures as in Cyprus – a former British colony.
