RAPID INCREASE IN NEW APPEALS BY ASYLUM SEEKERS

There was a rapid increase in the registration of new appeals by asylum seekers and foreigners before the Administrative Court of International Protection from 2020 to 2022. The total number of new appeals registered in 2022 amounts to approximately 9,180 cases. According to the analysis, which was prepared by the Head of the Appeals Subsection of the Administrative Court of International Protection, Senior Lawyer of the Republic, Ms. Yianna Hadjihanna, the number is more than six times higher compared to the number of appeals registered in 2020, which was approximately 1,464 cases.

In 2022, the Legal Service completed 8,788 cases at the Administrative Court for International Protection. Of the 4,279 decisions issued, 99.53% were in favour of the Republic. The remaining 4,509 cases were withdrawn and/or rejected due to non-promotion by the applicant. Compared to 2020, decisions in favour of democracy increased by 432.38%.

According to the data, the highest percentage of foreigners who appealed to the Administrative Court of International Protection in 2022, comes from Pakistan (25.99%), the countries of the African continent (22.14%), Bangladesh (19.79%) and India (14.80%).   

Regarding 2021, the countries with the highest percentage of foreigners who appealed to the Administrative Court of International Protection came from Bangladesh (23.93%), India (21.56%), Pakistan (16.68%) and the African continent (16.22%).

In 2022, the Legal Service handled at the Administrative Court about 600 cases of foreigners. He also handled 129 habeas corpus in the Supreme Court and about 100 appeals against decisions of the Administrative Court for International Protection.

The assistance of the Legal Service, in the context of migration management, is essential as it represents, before the competent State Courts, the Ministry of Interior, the Asylum Service and the Civil Registry and Migration Department".
