Filenews 28 April 2023

The Ministry of Justice and Public Order will soon be responsible for the regulatory framework governing the operation of the first detention facility for juvenile offenders in Cyprus.

According to information, the process for the creation of Juvenile Prisons has been launched, while it is only a matter of time before a public tender is announced, in order for the site to operate as soon as possible.

According to information, the Ministry of Justice has contacted the University of Cyprus to prepare a regulatory framework, which when received, will be immediately sent for legislative review.

Then, upon completion of the legislative review, it will be sent to the Council of Ministers for approval and then to the House of Representatives for its adoption into law.

A competent source said that the site is being considered to be created in the district of Nicosia or Larnaka.

According to state plans, the centre will be managed by a private individual, however, the Ministry of Justice will be responsible for its operation.

Initially, the venue will be able to accommodate up to ten minors, however, according to the plans so far, there will be the possibility of extending its capacity to 25 people in the future.

It is noted that children aged 16 to 21 will be held in the area, who will be sentenced by the Children's Court to detention for an offence committed before the age of 18.
