The Customs Department at Pafos Airport proceeded with the seizure of duty-free tobacco products, while the passenger, in whose luggage the products were allegedly found, after paying the amount of €11,000, was released.

According to a relevant announcement by the Ministry of Finance on April 21, 2023, following a relevant check carried out by officers of the Department of Customs and Excise at Pafos Airport, they found in the luggage of a passenger who was going to depart for a UK airport, 549 packages of 50 grams of tobacco, 10 packages of 200 pieces of cigarettes and 3 packs of 20 pieces of cigarettes, which did not bear the smoke-prone allergen label, the safety feature and the unique traceability identifier.

The suspect admitted that he purchased the duty-free tobacco products from the occupied areas in which the Government of the Republic of Cyprus does not exercise effective control and illegally transported them to the free areas with a view to transporting them to the United Kingdom.

He was subsequently arrested for flagrant customs offences, while tobacco products were confiscated as subject to confiscation.

The next day, the suspect was brought before the Pafos District Court, where his three-day detention was decided.

Later, after accepting his request for an out-of-court settlement of the offenses, with the payment of the sum of €11,000 and the abandonment of the confiscated tobacco products, the passenger was released.
