CAMERAS IN TWO OTHER LOCATIONS IN NICOSIA AND LIMASSOL

 Filenews 25 April 2023

The problems that delayed for a month the expansion of the photo-labelling system with the operation of new cameras at fixed points have been overcome. Soon the beginning is made with the new fourth point in Nicosia followed by others in two places in Limassol.

"F" reports that the cameras that have been placed at one of the most central intersections of Nicosia, despite the Lycabettus Police, are ready to be put into operation. The cameras have been delivered by the contractor to the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services and tests are currently taking place, so that if everything goes smoothly, they will be operational by the end of April or beginning of May. The point concerns the junction of Makarios Avenue with Spyrou Kyprianou and Digeni Akrita Avenues.

Currently, fixed cameras operate only in Nicosia at three points, namely at the junction of Griva Digeni with Dimosthenis Severis Avenues, Griva Digeni with Prodromou and Limassol with Armenia. The two cameras also operate on Griva Digeni, against Alpha Mega supermarket in Engomi, but they do not concern the new contract.

As far as mobile cameras are concerned, things are better here, since their receipt continues seamlessly. Eight cameras are currently operating all over Cyprus and four more will be received by the end of April. Four more will be received in May, the last ones, bringing their total number to 20. As explained to "F", each camera under the contract will be operated for a total of eight hours per 24 hours. Based on instructions, a mobile camera cannot be "set" on a street in the same place for more than two hours.

In the meantime, the Police are ready to proceed with the registration in the courts of the first cases concerning non-payment of an extrajudicial fine by cameras. The formula has been found for the data that the management company of the photo-tagging system should transmit to the Traffic Police and after preparing a file with the indictment, it will be sent to the Police Prosecutor's Office for registration.
