In a trial at the Paphos Assize Court that will meet on April 4, the six arrested in the case of possession of cannabis weighing 22 kg and cocaine weighing 400 grams, a pistol, and a sum of money in excess of €50,000 were indicted yesterday, The arrest of the six was made on February 23 after a coordinated operation by the YKAN and the Customs Department in Paphos.
The arrest of the six brought to trial and the finding of the drugs took place when members of the YKAN stopped a 23-year-old car driver for inspection. In the possession of the 23-year-old suspect were found in two cartons, 22 packages containing green dry cannabis plant matter, totalling about 22 kg, resulting in the members of the YKAN proceeding with his arrest.
Shortly afterwards, as part of the ongoing operation of YKAN, a 21-year-old car driver was stopped again in Paphos for inspection. Three packages containing cocaine, totalling about 400 grams, and a pistol were found in her vehicle. 25 fireworks and a small amount of cannabis, about one gram, were also found in her car.
The 21-year-old was also arrested by members of the Police, who also proceeded to arrest a third suspect, a 43-year-old man, who, according to the evidence under investigation, had yesterday handed over to the 23-year-old suspect, the cartons with the packages of 22 kg of cannabis.
Three other arrests, also as part of the operation and the investigation of the case, were subsequently made. Two other men, aged 43 and 28, and a woman aged 43, were arrested on the basis of court warrants issued on the basis of evidence obtained against them.
In searches carried out, among other evidence, the 28-year-old's possession and residence found the sum of €33,800, as well as a sum of €17,000, which were retained for the purpose of police examinations.
Also, a sum of money of €900, as well as 12 grams of cannabis plant matter, and a number of fireworks and firecrackers, were found after a search of the residence of the 43-year-old suspect.
