The Permanent Assize Court of Paphos rejected the objections of the defence lawyers in the trial for the death of a woman in Tremithousa with her 74-year-old husband as the defendant. In its interim decision, on the admissibility of the defendant's statements and whether they were made under the regime of free will, the Assize Court stated that all the incriminating statements of the accused, including those recorded in his testimony, were given of his free will without the exercise of the Police, methods of coercion or oppression.
The Court also said that the testimony before it is that any references made by the accused were undoubtedly voluntarily, despite the fact of denial of the right of access to a lawyer or any other right, which in the general context of its objection has been invoked by the defence, was not made in the manner in which his position was categorically stated.
For the sake of completeness, the president of the Assize Court said, the defendant from the first moment the members of the Police visited his home, apparently knew that for the Police he was suspected of the death of his wife.
The Court ordered that the 74-year-old remain in custody and set the next trial on March 28, 2023 at 09:30 in the morning.
