DOG TIED TO A VEHICLE AND DRAGGED - MAN TO APPEAR IN COURT ON MONDAY

Filenews 4 March 2023

A complaint on social media was made by a citizen who claims that an unknown man was dragging a dog, after tying it to his vehicle in a village in the Nicosia district.

As stated in the post, the dog was taken to a veterinary clinic and then to a safe place, while citizens are expected to proceed with an official complaint to the authorities.

UPDATE The driver who allegedly tied a dog with a rope to the back of his vehicle and dragged him down the street has been summoned to appear at a police station for questioning and as stated by Police spokesman Christos Andreou the intention is for the case to be registered in Court on Monday.

The incident was identified by citizens, who intervened, saving the dog, and then made a complaint to the police.

According to police spokesman Christos Andreou, "the case is being investigated", while the suspect is expected to be arrested shortly, as he was informed and goes to the station.

"Our intention is to interrogate him, to release him, because he is also old, he is 70 years old and the case to be registered on Monday, to give him an indictment to go directly to court on Monday," he said.

Mr Andreou was unable to provide more information because, he said, the suspect must first be questioned and "see what offences arise".

A spokesperson for the Police Communication Branch said earlier that "a complaint was made to the Police". Yesterday he was waiting for testimony to be taken, and there would also be tests on the route that the dog appeared to have been dragging for CCTV, he said.

"This is animal abuse. Once the case has been established it will be taken to court," he said.
