Police on Sunday arrested three people for illegal possession of over 96,000 firecrackers.

Police uncovered a stash of 96,140 firecrackers in a wooded area of Paphos when, shortly after 1 pm, they spotted three men unloading boxes from two cars.

They found a total of 10 cardboard boxes containing firecrackers in the first car, driven by a 34-year-old man, and another 52 boxes in the second car, driven by a 31-year-old with a 23-year-old passenger.

The three were arrested for evident offences.

Additionally the 34-year-old was found with a shoulder bag containing over €3,000 in cash, for which he did not adequate explanation.

Paphos police are continuing investigations.

The Larnaca District Court today imposed a fine of €1,100, 7 penalty points and deprivation of her driving license for two months, on a 27-year-old woman from Nicosia who was spotted last Saturday driving her car on the Nicosia - Larnaca highway at almost twice the speed of normal.

According to the spokesperson of the Larnaka Police Department, Haris Hadjigiasemi, "around 10.45 on the evening of Saturday, March 11, while members of the Road Accident Prevention Unit were carrying out traffic checks on the Nicosia - Larnaca highway, spotted despite Koshi, a car moving at a speed of 180 HAO instead of 100, which is the maximum by law limit".

The vehicle, he continued, "was stopped and found to be driven by a 27-year-old woman from Nicosia. The 27-year-old was arrested for an offence and taken to the Aradippou Police Station where she was charged in writing and released."

Today the woman appeared before the Larnaca District Court, which imposed a fine of €1,100, payable in three instalments, 7 penalty points and deprivation of her driving license for two months starting from today.
