STATUE THEFT - ARREST OF TWO MEN, WOMAN WANTED

Filenews 2 February 2023 - by Dora Christodoulou

Two more arrests were made yesterday by the Police in connection with the unprecedented action of last Friday with the theft of a bronze statue from a public place in Paphos. These are a Cypriot and a Syrian who were arrested under court warrants following evidence that emerged during the ongoing investigations of the Police.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a third person, a woman, who is believed to be involved in the vandalism and disappearance of the artwork. The 33-year-old foreigner, who had been arrested and detained for two days by a court decision, was released yesterday without charge, after no evidence was found to ultimately implicate her in the case.

At the same time, the authorities are now expressing confidence that the perpetrators of the theft have already managed to destroy the work, confirming the assessments expressed from the beginning that the goal of the profane perpetrators was to sell the material from which the bronze statue was made.
