GERMANY - 24 HOUR STRIKE OF WORKERS AT 7 AIRPORTS

 Filenews 15 February 2023

The German union Verdi today called on workers at 7 airports in Germany to go on a 24-hour strike on Friday, noting that collective bargaining efforts did not make significant progress.

The airports affected by this strike include Frankfurt, which is the largest in the country, as well as those of Munich, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Dortmund, Hanover and Bremen, Verdi said in a statement today.

The strike is expected to particularly affect domestic flights, according to the union, which noted that it had informed in advance of the strike action so that passengers could find alternative options.

The union is currently in negotiations for three groups of workers, ground staff, public sector executives and aviation safety workers.

"There is still a catastrophic shortage of ground handling workers--this was clearly felt by travelers last summer," Verdi board member Christine Belle said in a statement issued by the union.

Fraport, the company that manages Frankfurt Airport, which was used by more than 48 million travelers in 2022, has so far not responded to a Reuters request for comment on the news.
