The Police, for the purpose of preventing incidents of car theft, as well as theft of property from parked cars, make recommendations to the public, owners and responsible drivers of vehicles.
Incidents of theft are observed at regular intervals. Indicatively, the following is a series of protection measures that drivers and vehicle managers are encouraged to take to protect their property:
- We do not leave our engine running and never leave the keys in the ignition or in the car. Even if we are going to be away even for a very short time for a visit to a store, office or other place, we lock our car and have the keys in our possession
- We always lock the doors and fully raise the windows, even if our car is parked in front of our house or in another place that we consider safe
- We do not leave our car keys exposed in prominent places or in places that any third party can access in our home, workplace or any other place we visit. Especially when we are in crowded places such as shops, restaurants, etc., where there is an increased possibility of them becoming an object of theft, we take care of the safe storage of our car keys
- We always park our car in places where there is enough street lighting and preferably in supervised car parks. Dark or secluded spots make the work of thieves easier
- Finally, it is recommended to install an anti-theft alarm system in our car
Furthermore, the Police advises the public:
• Avoid leaving valuables in their car. If necessary, these items shall not be left exposed to public view, but shall be placed under the seats or in the luggage compartment.
In general, the public is urged to be vigilant and to cooperate closely with the Police and in case they detect anything suspicious, such as persons or vehicles moving suspiciously, or know anything about such incidents of theft, to immediately inform the local Police Station or to contact the Citizen's Line at the telephone number 1460 , as this can help identify suspected persons, solve theft incidents and prevent such incidents in the future.
